CATCAS Accomplishments-- Exitos de la Cámara.
Mister Soto informed us that there are eight work committees within CATCAS. He said that they are... Education, Cultural Preservation, Marketing, Community Security, Health, Infrastructure, Environmental Protection, and etc.
Click here to download the document in Spanish that he sent us which lists the projects each committee is working on. Below we give you a short summary in English of each committees projects:
EDUCATION Committee:
is working with the Telesecundaria High School in Puerto Viejo, hoping to help them find a plot of land of their own and thus more permanent home. It is also trying to help the Cahuita High School get funding for reparations.
is working with INA (the Costa Rican Institute of Learning) on some courses with the high school in BriBri.
is working with The Biological Corredor with their Group of Youth Leaders of the Future.
CULTURAL Committee
puts on an annual event called the International Gastronomic Festival of the South Caribbean. In September of 2008, it will be the 5th annual.
MARKETING AND PROMOTIONS Committee:
will soon be announcing the date for seminars in marketing for small business owners with ACOPROT (the Costa Rican Association of Tourism Professionals).
bought a 1200 square meter lot in Hone Creek and will be opening offices soon.
participate in various tourism fairs and events through out the year to promote the zone.
invite television, newspapers, and radio outlets to the area to highlight cultural events and promote the area.
SECURITY Committee:
is working to get more tourist police and regular police officers to our area.
have helped procure two patrol cars and three motor cycles for the zone.
promotes training in Community Watch areas.
works to make it easier for visitors to the zone to be able to file reports of crime and be able to go home assured that the report be followed up on.
supports the life guard program in Cocles which has rescued more than 250 folks!
is working to expand the life guard program to additional beaches.
HEALTH Committee:
participates in the Blue Flag program.
works with the Ministry of Health against dengue in the area.
INFRASTRUCTURE Committee:
working on getting the road fixed up--see July 4th article.
is working with local Development Associations to support the aqueduct project in Hone Creek.
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION Committee:
They have a representative on the "Comite Zonal Forestal" which works toward forest protection and environmental law enforcement.
