Is Water a Basic Human Right?
The rush is on to rapidly collect the signatures of 5% of the Costa Rican population to ask the National Assembly to declare water a basic human right, to assure that the population has a say in what happens to their water resources, and to protect the environment in general.
The Alliance has an official petition (click here to download). They are suggesting that we each collect at least 10 signatures which will ask the legislature to:
- Declare water in Costa Rica as a basic human right
- Not privatize the water supply
- Protect ecosystems
- Allow Costa Rican citizens the right to make short, medium, and long term decisions about their own water supply.
There are rules to signing the petition
1. All signees must be adult, Costa Rican citizens
2. Sign in black or blue ink.
3. The whole line must be completely and legibly filled in.
4. Do NOT number the pages, leave the administrative parts blank.
5. When you have one or several sheets filled with 10 signatures, contact: 2283 - 7080 or mail to Apartado Postal 134-2050 San Pedro de Montes de Oca.
We don't have much time! If you're not a citizen, you can still collect 10 signatures and send in the form.
